About Warrnambool
Located 264kms west of Melbourne, Warrnambool is home to many tourist attractions, including Logan’s Beach, where every year between May and October, the southern right whales return to calve, often swimming within 100 metres of the shore and easily seen from the viewing platforms.
Dairy farming, horticulture, fishing, agriculture, manufacturing, retail, health and community services, education and tourism make up the bulk of industry in Warrnambool, which is the largest city on the Great Ocean Road. The city is bounded by two rivers, the ocean and spectacular beaches. The foreshore is unspoilt and remains in its natural state, and the beaches and rivers offer a complete paradise for all types of fishing. Worth a visit is Flagstaff Hill, a life-size recreated village that reflects the atmosphere of a nineteenth century coastal port in the Warrnambool area.
Further afield, the Tower Hill State Game Reserve is a great place to picnic, view the wildlife or take a trail excursion around the extinct volcano. The Hopkins Falls, north of Warrnambool, are also quite spectacular during the wetter months. The ‘Learn to Surf’ school and beach trail rides are other popular activities.
