Liebig Street in WarrnamboolWarrnambool is situated on Victoria's far south-west coast, approximately 264 kilometres west of Melbourne and has a population of approximately 30,000 people.  The coast around Warrnambool is known as the Shipwreck Coast, due to the large number of water vessels that ran aground in the 1800s and early 1900s due to ferocious weather conditions and the rocky coastline.

These days Warrnambool is a popular tourist destination with an extensive commercial centre based around Liebig Street, Kepler Street, Koroit Street and Timor Street and is separated from the ocean by coastal reserves and parkland. Historic buildings within the city centre include the post office (built in 1870), courthouse (1871) and Western Hotel (1869).      

Dairy farming, horticulture, fishing, agriculture, manufacturing, retail, health and community services, education and tourism make up the bulk of industry in Warrnambool, which is the largest city on the Great Ocean Road. The city is bounded by two rivers, the ocean and spectacular beaches making it a popular tourist destination, particularly in the summer months.

Department of Health Victoria  Gateway to a range of health information for the community and health professionals, including links to the Better Health Channel, publications, food safety alerts, public hospitals and health services statistics, aged care resources, career information and employment opportunties.

Otway Division of General Practice (ODGP)  The Otway DGP, located in south west Victoria, provides education, training and practice management support to allied health, nursing and medical practitioners. They also manage a variety of programs that provide information and support to the community they represent on a wide range of health issues.

Warrnambool City Council, by special arrangement with a number of Warrnambool businesses and attractions, is pleased to present students on clinical placament in Warrnambool with the "GGT UDRH Student Privilege Card". This card and asscoiated privileges may include free passes, discount on a number of purchases, and/or special offer(s) associated with purchase. Please note students residing in Warrnambool are not eligible for the student discount card.

Shopping

Coles, IGA and Safeways are the main supermarket chains in Warrnambool. Please note that the opening hours are typically more restricted than those in the city.

The Warrnambool Undercover Market is held every Sunday from 8.30am - 1.00pm at the Showgrounds in Koroit Street. The Warrnambool Hillside Market is held on the 2nd Sunday of every month between November and April from 10.00am - 2.00pm in Merri Street (Flagstaff Hill).

Dining

Warrnambool showcases a variety of dining experiences from restaurants to cafes, hotels and takeaway foods, many of them located on central Liebig Street.

Sports, Recreation and Tourism

Aquazone in Warrnambool boasts three indoor pools, one outdoor pool, a fully equipped gymnasium and scheduled aerobic and spin classes. Warrnambool is home to many tourist attractions including Logan's Beach, where every year between May and October, the southern right whales return to calve, often swimming within 100 metres of the shore and easily seen from the viewing platforms.

Flagstaff Hill, a life-size recreated village that reflects the atmosphere of a nineteenth century coastal port in the Warrnambool area is well worth a visit.  Further afield the Tower Hill State Game Reserve is a great place to picnic, view the wildlife or take a trail excursion around the extinct volcano. The Hopkins Falls north of Warrnambool, are also quite spectacular during the wetter months. The 'Learn to Surf' school and beach trail rides are other popular activities.

A short drive east is the Great Ocean Road, with the Bay of Martyrs and the Twelve Apostles all within an hour of Warrnambool.

Banks

There are seven major banks in Warrnambool - the Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ), Bendigo Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), Rabobank. St George, Westpac and South West Credit. Bank hours are typically 9.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday, although ATMs allow 24/7 access to funds.

Libraries and Internet Access

The Warrnambool City Library is located in Liebig Street and is open 9.30am - 5.00pm Monday to Thursday; 9.30am - 8.00pm Friday, and 10.00am - 12.00pm Saturday.

Internet access is available at the library. Students can also access the internet via the GGT UDRH's Warrnambool Student Learning Centre (SLC).

Post Offices, Fuel and Other Services

There are four Post Offices in Warrnambool:

There are numerous fuel stations including BP, Mobil, Caltex, Shell and Safeway. Most are located on Raglan Parade.

There are two Laundromats in Warrnambool: Timor Street Laundrette, (03) 5562 0474 and Fairy Street Laundrette, (03) 5562 6651.

Travel Times

Warrnambool is located 262 kilometres south west of Melbourne and is accessible by both car and train. The travel time by car from Melbourne is approximately three hours.
