About Stawell

Stawell is located 236km north west of Melbourne and is reknown for the Stawell Easter Festival featuring the internationally-famed 'Stawell Easter Gift' foot race. Tourism, agriculture, retail and gold form the basis of industry in the region, with Victoria’s largest deep underground gold mine a major feature.

Health Services

The Stawell Hospital is in its 145th year. Over recent times the health service has improved access to a number of important clinical services including chemotherapy, post acute care, diabetes educator, speech therapy, dietetics, home-based midwifery and an increased range of visiting specialists.

Department of Health Victoria  Gateway to a range of health information for the community and health professionals, including links to the Better Health Channel, publications, food safety alerts, public hospitals and health services statistics, aged care resources, career information and employment opportunties.

Otway Division of General Practice (ODGP)  The Otway DGP, located in south west Victoria, provides education, training and practice management support to allied health, nursing and medical practitioners. They also manage a variety of programs that provide information and support to the community they represent on a wide range of health issues.

Search for a hospital in Victoria  'MyHospitals' is an Australian Government initiative making it easier for people to access information about hospitals, including details on performance, admissions, accreditation and the types of services provided by each hospital.

Victoria's Mental Health Services  Victorian Government website showcasing a range of information on the state's public mental health services, including preventative programs, assessment and treatment options. The information is designed for mental health professionals and for community members, and includes links to related sites and useful resources, publications, and career information and opportunities.

Shopping

There are two large supermarket chains, IGA and Safeway. Please note that the opening hours are typically more restricted than those in the city.

The Fairdinkum Farm and Craft Market is held on the last Sunday of the month from 10.00am - 2.00pm at the showgrounds. There is also an SES Market that is held at the Drill Hall from 9.00am - 1.00pm on the first Sunday of the month.

Dining

There are numerous dining options including take aways, cafes, bakeries, pizza parlours, pubs and restaurants.

Sports, Recreation and Tourism

Stawell is often chosen as a touring centre for the Grampians, but the area offers many other attractions. Sister's Rocks and Bunjil's Shelter, a picnic area with Aboriginal paintings can be found along the highway, with Lake Fyans to the south. Visitors can visit Willow Park, Caspers World In Miniature, the Through Time Heritage Trail, Pioneer Lookout or local vineyards. The more energetic can take part in water sports, ballooning or horse-riding.

Banks

There are three major banks in Stawell: the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) and the St George Bank. Bank hours are typically 9.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday, although ATMs allow 24/7 access to funds.

Library and Internet Access

The Stawell Library is located in Sloane Street and offers internet access to students. The library is open Tuesday to Friday from 10.00am - 5.30pm; 10.00am - 12.00pm Saturday and 2.00pm - 5.00pm, Sunday.

Post Offices, Fuel and Other Services

The Stawell Post Shop is located at 87-89 Main Street and is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am - 5.00pm.

Stawell is located 236 kilometres north west of Melbourne and is accessible by both car and train. The travel time from Melbourne by car is approximately two and a half hours.
