About Port Fairy

East Beach at Port FairyPort Fairy is located on the south west coast of Victoria, a 25 minute drive west of Warrnambool. The town has safe swimming beaches, excellent walks and boasts a thriving arts and crafts community with many galleries and studios to visit. There are activities and festivals year round and the world-famous Port Fairy Folk Festival draws thousands of people from all parts of the globe. 

Port Fairy has a sheltered harbour, an excellent wharf walk and a fishing fleet which keeps the town supplied with fresh seafood daily. The town has retained much of its colonial architecture providing visitors with a fascinating insight into the history of one of Victoria's earliest ports. Port Fairy is a very popular tourist spot particularly in the summer months.

Department of Health Victoria  Gateway to a range of health information for the community and health professionals, including links to the Better Health Channel, publications, food safety alerts, public hospitals and health services statistics, aged care resources, career information and employment opportunties.

Otway Division of General Practice (ODGP)  The Otway DGP, located in south west Victoria, provides education, training and practice management support to allied health, nursing and medical practitioners. They also manage a variety of programs that provide information and support to the community they represent on a wide range of health issues.

Shopping

IGA is the local supermarket in Port Fairy and is located in Sackville Street. Please note that the opening hours are typically more restricted than those in the city.

The Port Fairy Craft Market is held on the 2nd Saturday of every month between 9.00am - 2.00pm and the Port Fairy Farmers Market is held on the 3rd Saturday of every month between 8.00am - 2.00pm in Railway Place.

Dining

Port Fairy has a range of a la carte restaurants as well as lovely coffee shops and great fish’n’chips. As Port Fairy is a “tourist town” there are many and varied dining options throughout the town, including cafes, Asian restaurants, a pizzeria, pubs and fine dining restaurants.

Sports, Recreation and Tourism

Fishing and swimming are popular activities and surfers will enjoy the great breaks readily available on the south shoreline. West of Port Fairy, ‘The Crags’ is located along a rugged stretch of coastline and provides walking tracks and beautiful scenery. There a four major banks in Port Fairy, including the Commonwealth Bank (CBA), the National Bank (NAB), Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) and St George.  Bank hours are typically 9.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday, although ATMs allow 24/7 access to funds.

Library and Internet Access

The Port Fairy Library is located in Sackville Street and is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10.30am - 5.00pm and Saturday from 10.00am - 12.00pm. Internet access for students is available at the library.

Post Offices, Fuel and Other Services

The Port Fairy Post Office is located at 22 Bank Street and is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am - 5.00pm.

Port Fairy has a petrol station located in Bank Street.

Travel Times

Port Fairy is located 289 kilometres south west of Melbourne and is accessible by both car and train/bus. The travel time by car from Melbourne is approximately three hours and fifteen minutes. Trains run to Warrnambool from Melbourne, with connecting bus services to Port Fairy.
