About Penola

Penola and the wine district of Coonawarra are famous for their Greats — great food, great wines, and great Australians. Penola, the oldest town in the Limestone Coast, has many attractions to offer. The historical character of the town is important and there are many signposts to remind the visitor of the past and places of interest worth seeing. A self-guided walk is one good way to explore the town.

The 1880 two-storey Victorian mansion Yallum Park, 8km west of Penola, is said to be the best preserved house of its type in Australia. In direct contrast tiny Sharam Cottage in Petticoat Lane is made of slabs, and was the first house in the town.

Coonawarra is arguably Australia's most famous and finest wine district. The wine critics' superlatives, the trophies, the medals, the wine lists and the shelf space testify to its pre-eminence. Its secret lies in a magical marriage of rich red terra rossa soil, limestone, pure underground water and a long cool ripening season for the grapes.  There are also many excellent restaurants in the town. Indulge in meals that tantalise the palate and drink some of the finest wines in Australia!
