About Penola

Penola and the wine district of Coonawarra are nationally and internationally reknown for great wines (particularly red wine) and today the region also offers great food.  The secret to its great wines lies in the combination of rich red terra rossa soil, limestone, pure underground water and a long cool ripening season for the grapes. The town is also known as the central location in the life of Blessed Mary McKillop, the first Australian to gain Sainthood.
