Naracoorte

Naracoorte is a town within the Limestone Coast region of South Australia and has a population of about 4,890. The town has historically relied on sheep, cattle and wheat farming. In recent decades, tourism has become a major industry with the promotion of the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves National Park and the internationally-recognised wetland, Bool Lagoon. Naracoorte also receives a substantial number of visitors due to its proximity to the Coonawarra, Wrattonbully and Padthaway wine regions, plus many smaller local vineyards.

Limestone Coast Division of General Practice (LCDGP)  The Limestone Coast DGP is a membership-based, non-profit support agency providing a range of services for the communities of south east South Australia, including tailored programs that assist local General Practitioners (GPs) and their practice staff to improve the health of the local community.

Shopping

Safeway and IGA are the two main supermarkets in Naracoorte. Please note that the opening hours are typically more restricted than those in the city.

The Naracoorte Country Market is held on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 8.30am - 1.00pm at the Naracoorte Historic Vehicle Club, McDonnell Street.

Dining

Naracoorte has a variety of places to eat including restaurants, take away, hotels, cafes and a bakery.

 

Sports, Recreation and Tourism

Naracoorte offers many sporting facilities including a swimming pool, gymnasium facilities and a golf course.

Naracoorte is home to some beautiful limestone caves set within the Naracoorte Caves Conservation Park. In the evening you can watch the bats emerge from the Bat Cave, which is an impressive sight.

There are some amazing fossils in the Victoria Fossil Cave, which you can tour with a Ranger. There are also Ranger tours for the Alexandra Cave and the Blanche Cave, and a self-guided tour around the Wet Cave.

You can also find great information about the wool industry in the Sheep's Back Museum. There are some excellent walking tracks through the town centre and along the Naracoorte creek.

There is a huge wetland region just south of Naracoorte at the Bool Lagoon Game Reserve and Hacks Lagoon Conservation Park.

Banks

There are five main banks in Naracoorte  - the Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ), BankSA, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), National Bank of Australia (NAB) and Westpac.  Bank hours are typically 9.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday, although ATMs allow 24/7 access to funds.

Libraries and Internet Access

The Naracoorte Public Library is located in De Garis Place and is open 9.30am - 5.00pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 10.00am - 8.00pm Thursday; and 8.30am - 12.00pm, Saturday.

Internet access is available to students at the Naracoorte Visitor Information Centre.

Post Offices, Fuel and Other Services

The Naracoorte Post Shop is located at 23 Omerod Street and is open from 9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

There are numerous fuel stations in Naracoorte including Mobil, Shell, SA Farmers Fuel and Fuelink.

There is one Laundromat in Naracoorte located in Ormerod Street.

Local Transport

Three taxi services operate in Naracoorte. Caveland Taxis can be contacted on 0407 838 717; Naracoorte Taxis (08) 8762 4111 and South and East Taxis on 0408 838 689.

Travel

Naracoorte is located 334 kilometres south east of Adelaide and is accessible by both car and bus. Travel times by car are approximately four and a half hours from Melbourne; three and a half hours from Adelaide; twenty minutes from the Coonawarra and one hour from Robe, Kingston or Mount Gambier.
