About Mount Gambier

Mount Gambier is a small city of 23,000 located on the Princes Highway between Adelaide and Melbourne. It is surrounded by rich pastoral land, perfect for the production of high quality cheeses and other agricultural produce. Mount Gambier offers excellent shopping and delicious taste sensations! Some of the local produce can be sampled in specialty stores in the city centre, or travel out to the surrounding berry and dairy farms to taste and view production first hand. 

There are many things to do in Mt Gambier, including exploring nearby limestone caves and sinkholes, the Cave Gardens, Umpherston Cave and Engelbrecht Cave. A trip to view the Blue Lake in the heart of Mt Gambier is also a must.

Shopping

Woolworths, Coles and Foodtown, are the main supermarket chains located in Mount Gambier. Please note that the opening hours are typically more restricted than those in the city.

The Mount Gambier Market is held every Saturday at the Rotary Club behind Harvey Norman on the Jubilee Highway. The Blue Lake Market is held every Sunday at 155 Commercial Street West.

With nine hotels, seven restaurants, and more than 20 take away venues throughout Mt Gambier you will find a variety to cater for all tastes and budgets.

Sports and Recreation

There is a wide variety of sport and recreation available in Mount Gambier including, boating, ten pin bowling, bushwalking, cycling trails, fishing, golf, speedway, squash, tennis, swimming and several fitness centres.

Banks

There are seven major banks in Mount Gambier: the Adelaide Bank, ANZ, Bank SA, Bendigo Bank, CBA, Westpac and Rabobank. Bank hours are typically 9.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday, although ATMs allow 24/7 access to funds.

Libraries and Internet Access

The Mount Gambier Public Library is located in Watson Tce. Opening hours are from 9.00am - 6.00pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday; 9.00am - 7.00pm Thursday; and, 9.30am - 12.30pm Saturday.

Internet access is available to students at the Mount Gambier Public Library (opening hours above). Students who have registered with the GGT UDRH can also access the internet through our 24/7 Student Learning Centre.

Post Offices, Fuel and Other Services


There are two Post Offices in Mount Gambier. They are located at 30 Helen St and 224 Commercial Rd and are open from 9.00am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday.

The three main service stations: BP on Commercial Street; Mobil on the Jubilee Highway, and a Caltex on Commercial Street.

Travel Times
