About Keith
Keith is a modern country township located on the Dukes Highway, with a population of approximately 1,300. The Ngarranjeri people occupied the area around Keith prior to European settlement.
The town is named after Lord Kintore, also known as Lord Keith, who was the Governor of South Australia in 1889 when the town was officially proclaimed. In the 1940s CSIRO scientists discovered that the land around Keith was particularly productive, and over time Keith has had considerable success with cattle studs, grain crops and lucerne. Today Keith is still recognised as the "lucerne capital of Australia" with its distinctive purple paddocks.
Health Services
Keith and District Hospital provides medical, nursing convalescence post surgery, emergency, aged care, paediatric, palliative and gerontic care to a catchment area of approximately 3,000 people. These services are supported by a visiting General Surgeon, Urologist, Cardiologist, Audiologist, Podiatrist, Dermatologist and Psychiatrist.
