About Colac

Situated in southern Victoria, Colac is a small city of about 11,000 people. Colac supports a large timber industry and agricultural area, primarily dairy and beef cattle farming. These local industries produce a large range of products including milk, a variety of cheeses, ice cream and yoghurt.

Health Services

Colac Area Health is a provider of acute care, emergency services, residential aged care and a diverse range of community services, including alcohol and drug counselling and a range of allied health services.  The Birregurra Community Health Centre and Colac Neighbourhood House provide additional services to the wider community.

Department of Health Victoria  Gateway to a range of health information for the community and health professionals, including links to the Better Health Channel, publications, food safety alerts, public hospitals and health services statistics, aged care resources, career information and employment opportunties.

Otway Division of General Practice (ODGP)  The Otway DGP, located in south west Victoria, provides education, training and practice management support to allied health, nursing and medical practitioners. They also manage a variety of programs that provide information and support to the community they represent on a wide range of health issues.

Shopping

Safeway and Coles are the major supermarkets located in Colac. Please note that the opening hours are typically more restricted than those in the city.

The Colac Lions Sunday Market is held on the third Sunday of every month at the Memorial Square in Hesse Street and the car boot Market is held on the last Sunday of every month on the Princess Highway, next to the Shell service station.

Dining

Colac has a range of cafes, restaurants and hotels serving quality locally grown food and wine. There are also plenty of take away shops, pizza, fish and chips, and Chinese to name a few.

Sports, Recreation and Tourism

Lake Colac is popular for a range of activities, including boating, rowing, yachting, swimming, water-skiing, windsurfing and fishing.
There are gym facilities at the Bluewater Fitness Centre, and a local ten-pin bowling alley and golf course.

Colac is rich in natural and historic attractions, including the scenic Otway Ranges and volcanic features of Red Rock.  Take a walk through the 15 hectare Botanic Gardens, with more than 1,000 different plant species to view.

The Colac Otway Performing Arts and Cultural Centre is home to an impressive array of regular live performances and also houses a cinema that shows the latest releases. You'll find national, regional and local artists featuring in music, dance, comedy and drama performances during the centre's theatrical season.

Banks

There are six major banks in Colac: the Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ), Bendigo Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), National Bank of Australia (NAB), St George Bank and Westpac. Bank hours are typically 9.00am - 4.00pm Monday to Friday, although ATMs allow 24/7 access to funds.

Library and Internet Access

The Corangamite Regional Library is located in Gellibrand Street and is open Monday to Thursday from 10.00am - 5.30pm; 10.00am - 7.00pm Friday, and 10.00am - 12.00pm on Saturday. Internet access is available to students on placement in the library.

Post Offices, Fuel and Other Services

There are two Post Offices in Colac:

 There are two major service stations in Colac - Shell and BP. Both are open 24/7.

Colac has two laundromats located in The Arcade in Murray Street, and at the corner of Moore and Donaldson Streets. They are both open 7.30am -7.30pm.

Travel Times

Colac is accessible from Melbourne by both car and train. Colac is located 149 kilometres south west of Melbourne with a travel time by car of approximately two hours.
