Type 2 Diabetes and Depression: Assessing the Prevalence in Victoria and Identifying Effective Public Health Interventions
This project is examining two main questions:
- What is the extent of co-morbid depression (including depressive symptoms and disorders) among people with type 2 diabetes?
- Based on available evidence, what are the most effective public health interventions for the early detection and treatment of co-morbid depression among people with type 2 diabetes?
This project will review the available literature, assess the prevalence using a number of databases, and administer measures of depression and related disorders to all patients with type 2 diabetes in ten General Practices distributed around Victoria. Using process re-design with health care professionals, patients and carers, along with the evidence gathered as above, a report with practical recommendations for public health interventions for effective and efficient management of co-morbid depression will be produced.
This project is funded by the Department of Human Services - Victoria.
