Dr Michael Coates (PhD) is the Deputy Director of the GGT UDRH's Warrnambool Campus and is also Program Coordinator of the Primary Health Care Research Evaluation and Development (PHCRED) program. His role involves management of the Research Capacity Building and Researcher Development programs, and planning, execution and supervision of associated research projects. He is also actively involved in mentorship of Department staff and affiliated researchers and in the delivery of an education and training program for early- to mid-career researchers.

Dr Coates is also part of the research team working on the True Blue project, which is examining models of collaborative care for depression in patients with the chronic diseases diabetes and heart disease. He is currently working on a NHMRC grant that is proposing to use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to track the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in culturally and linguistically diverse population groups and to predict areas of high risk.

He has an interest in primary health care and rural health issues, with his main research interests focussing on the application of GIS and numerical modellings to national and global health issues.

Dr Coates previously held a position as Senior Lecturer with Deakin University.
