Welcome to the Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health

The Greater Green Triangle University Department of Rural Health (GGT UDRH) is a partnership between Flinders University and Deakin University.  The Department was established in 2000 and is supported by the Australian Government's UDRH, Pharmacy Academics at UDRHs (PAUDRH), and UDRH Mental Health programs.

The Department undertakes an integrated program of research, education and training in an effort to promote excellence in rural and remote health education, training and research, and to ensure practical outcomes and long-term benefits for the communities of the Greater Green Triangle region.  Our extensive research program includes a number of National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC)-funded projects. The most recent of these is the Mothers After Gestational Diabetes in Australia (MAGDA) study; Preventing Diabetes in Pregnancy from Progressing to Type 2 Diabetes, which is focusing on developing and implementing a system of care to reduce the risk of progression to type 2 diabetes in women who have had GDM.

In 2011, the Department was awarded an Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute (APHCRI) Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) receiving funding for four years to address primary health care quality, governance, performance and sustainability issues identified within the national health reform agenda. This Centre of Research Excellence in Primary Health Care Clinical Microsystems  incorporates the clinical microsystem approach to investigate improved models in regional governance and e-health, effective multidisciplinary teamwork, and primary care performance and accountability.

The Greater Green Triangle UDRH operates a successful Student Support Program that aims to improve the experiences of health science students on rural placements with the intention of increasing the likelihood of return to rural practice after graduation. Services and resources include access to high standard, low cost accommodation, financial support, 24/7 IT usage, orientation tours and information on towns within the region, social networking opportunities and education & training opportunities.

The Department's strong Education and Training program includes Indigenous Health, Mental Health, Pharmacy, Public Health and Workforce. The program focuses on continuing professional education for medical, allied and other health professionals, academic programs for both pharmacists and mental health professionals and the participation in research and educational projects for Indigenous Australians. Population Health Seminars, Cultural Awareness Training, and skilling online via CPDWorks are just some examples of the activities provided by the GGT UDRH within this program.
